Tamir Rice’s 5th Year Anniversary Events

November 20

On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, The Tamir Rice Foundation will be holding two events to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Tamir’s death. The events are a fundraiser to support the new Tamir Rice Afrocentric Cultural Center, which will provide artistic, educational and civic programs for youth that celebrate the history and culture of people of African descent.

A CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF TAMIR RICE

Join us for an inspiring evening of the arts, featuring a conversation between internationally renowned artist Theaster Gates and journalist activist Bakari Kitwana. Gates and special guests will examine the role of the artist activist in the pursuit of racial equity and justice, in Cleveland and beyond.

Highlights of the evening include an unveiling of plans for the new Tamir Rice Afrocentric Cultural Center, a screening of the Emmy-nominated documentary short “Traveling While Black”, remarks by artists Michael Rakowitz, EJ Hill, Shelia Pree Bright and Amanda D. King and performances by Jasiri X and Lexy Lattimore.

A BENEFIT LUNCHEON AND UNVEILING OF TAMIR’S CENTER

A benefit luncheon for the Tamir Rice Afrocentric Cultural Center with Theaster Gates will be held at noon on November 20 at the Intercontinental Cleveland, 9801 Carnegie Avenue. Gates will discuss his artistic practices and his personal and professional connections with Tamir Rice. Tickets for the benefit luncheon include admission to the evening of the arts.
