The Cleveland Furniture Bank (CFB) is not just a place where furniture is donated for those in need. During a recent visit to their Middleburg Heights location, I learned that the CFB is so much more.
Walking through the front doors of this unassuming building, I realized I was entering the mother of all thrift stores. Not only do they boast racks of well-organized clothes and shelves full of gently used household items, the huge warehouse space is filled with new furniture at bargain prices. I could easily refurnish my entire house and replenish my wardrobe in one visit.
But the most impressive part of this amazing thrift store is not the upcycled furniture or the vintage glassware. Through its non-profit mission, CFB seeks “to restore hope to Northeast Ohio residents by providing basic home furnishings that help turn a house into a home.” Last year alone, the organization provided 16,383 pieces of furniture to local families.
Through their Beds 4 Kids program, CFB donates thousands of brand-new beds to children in need. From the organization website: “In 2012, after discussion with agencies and caseworkers, the Cleveland Furniture Bank became aware that many of the children who are a part of the families being served were sleeping in less than ideal conditions. Although CFB was always able to provide one mattress to each family, the children were usually left wanting.” A donation of just $110 provides a new bed for a child, and below is just one example of the program’s impact that Executive Director, Tom Gaghan, shared with local author Regina Brett:
Angie escaped from an abusive marriage, lost her job, and had to move into a shelter. She has three sons, ranging from 2 to 13. She’s 32. In July, she was able to get beds for her children. She told the staff, “Picking out pieces of furniture was like picking up the pieces of my life. When the delivery truck arrives, I am going to set it all up so that when my three boys come home and see their new beds they will be surprised and it will be like Christmas.”
This wonderful program is funded through donations, thrift store sales, and CFB’s “Inside the Park Home RUN” fundraiser which will take place on July 30 at Progressive Field.
