This year, more than ever, I have found solace and hope in the rhythm and promise of nature.
Day always turns to night. We can wake up and try again. Cleveland’s beloved Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Connie Schultz tells us each evening to “breathe,” saying “we’ve done what we can for today.” Like my mom, she gently reminds us that even the biggest problems are more manageable after a good night’s sleep.
Nature is full of beginnings and endings. Some easier than others, for sure. And just like humans, nature evolves in response to the environment and its caretakers.
Over the past five years, I have been the lucky caretaker of WISH Cleveland. And I am deeply grateful to the amazing team of freelance writers, editors, volunteers, and community partners who have helped nurture it along the way.
It has been an inspiration and an honor to watch emerging leaders like Christin Farmer of Birthing Beautiful Communities, Chris Knestrick of the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless), and grassroots heroes like Donté Gibbs who organized Donté’s Gift Express and the Masks for Community COVID-19 response receive the respect, funding, and community support they deserve.
WISH Cleveland has grown up alongside them.
In the spirit of growth and recognition — I am excited to announce that WISH Cleveland’s social justice advocacy and storytelling efforts will continue under the new ownership of Rachel Bevel. A Cleveland native and CMSD graduate, Rachel attended Miami University of Ohio, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Creative Writing. She is a trusted local journalist and longtime WISH Cleveland contributor who lives in Euclid with her husband and children.
Be good to her, Cleveland. She is the best of us.
Earlier this week, the Winter Solstice marked the longest night of the year and the promise of brighter days ahead. I can’t think of a more perfect analogy for the light we are hoping to see in our community and the world, when the darkness of winter is behind us.
Keep hope.Trust in nature. And let yourself be inspired by the big ideas and bold energy of the next generation of leaders like Rachel, Christin, Chris, and Donté.
Tomorrow is a bright new day. And it’s about time.
