NEOCH: Homeless Does Not Mean Invisible

It’s been said that the measure of a civilization is how it treats its most vulnerable.

Have you witnessed the national media attention and social media buzz claiming to have found the “cure for homelessness” in cities across America? These programs are innovative and exciting, but what you may not realize is that several organizations in northeast Ohio have been doing similar work in our community for many years with tremendous positive impact on our community.  These are unsung heroes doing un-glamorous work, so they don’t always make front page news. That’s why it’s part of our mission at the Good Cause Blog to share these stories and encourage our readers to support the social justice and homeless advocacy work going on right here in our own back yard.

The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH) has been working to improve the lives of our most vulnerable and find solutions to end homeless in Northeast Ohio for more than 30 years. Their mission is to organize and empower homeless and at risk men, women and children to break the cycle of poverty through public education, advocacy and the creation of nurturing environments. The coalition brings together people of diverse interests such as religious groups, social service providers and homeless individuals themselves to create a path out of homelessness. It is a daunting task – but together these organizations are changing lives and impacting the future of our community.

The Cleveland Street Chronicle: You know that newspaper you get offered each time you walk into the West Side Market? Your purchase or donation supports the work of NEOCH and gives voice to those who are served by their mission.

Volunteer to participate in the Homeless Stand Down Cleveland. For the last 25 years, this annual day of caring and support for the homeless has taken place in the city of Cleveland. Participants receive warm clothing, fresh haircuts, family photos, hot meals, health checkups and more.

Learn about NEOCH and spread the word about this important work. And of course, donate!

NEOCH is always collecting blankets, hygiene kits, rain ponchos, etc. Homeless does not mean invisible, and NEOCH ensures their lives are seen as worthy of our attention. We must support organizations like NEOCH, who have taken the reins in caring for our most vulnerable. To donate or volunteer, visit the NEOCH website.
